There is a lot of confusion regarding UI/UX job titles and descriptions in games. Oftentimes, roles are mixed up or job responsibilities overlap. Even as someone who has been working in the industry for years, I still find it hard to label myself since my work includes different aspects of UI development. For those seeking to enter this industry, it can be difficult to find a job that fits your skills since companies might define and name a role based on their specific needs.
A Spectrum of UI/UX Roles
The key areas of UI/UX disciplines include Research, Design, Art, Tech, and Code.
Inspired by WeCanFixItInUI's Spectrum of UI Roles, I created this graphic with a few adjustments based on my knowledge and experience. There are still more job titles I'm probably not aware of but I listed down an overview of some of the following roles:
Disclaimer: Job titles & scope of responsibilities can vary from company to company.
• Game User Researcher
Evaluates player behavior, conduct playtests, and integrate research & usability testing into the development process.
• UX Designer

• UI VFX Artist
Design, implement, and optimize visual effects while working closely with UI designers, engineers, and technical artists.
• UI Technical Artist

UI/UX Team
Once you connect all these roles together, you form a UI/UX Team!
Ideally, it would be great to have someone for each role but not all companies have the budget or have adapted UI/UX into their development pipeline which makes it common to see a combination of these roles.
I hope that gives you an idea of what type of role you’d like to pursue! If there's a job title you'd like to add, feel free to comment down below!
